Germany - Darmstadt Artists' Colony
Among the artists who most moulded Darmstadt Art Nouveau
were the Viennese architect Joseph Maria Olbrich, the graphic artist and then
architect Peter Behrens and the painter Hans Christiansen.
Instead of floral ornaments (Art Nouveau) abstract lines can be found in the
works of the colony, sometimes characterised by almost classic reservation,
sometimes in youthful agitation.
The Darmstadt publisher Alexander Koch was an important proponent of this style with his magazines "Innendekoration" ("Interior decoration") and "Deutsche Kunst und Dekoration" ("German Art and Decoration"); these magazines are still amongst the most important sources in the field of art research.
