The artists and the programme of the Darmstadt artists' colony were important in Germany around 1900.

The initiator and financier was the Hessian Archduke Ernst Ludwig, who also provided the colony with an area of land on the Mathildenhöhe. In the course of a decade various workshop associations had been founded in Dresden and Munich on the initiative of young artists (Münchner Vereinigten Werkstätten für Kunst und Handwerk ("Munich association of workshops for arts and crafts")).

Their aim was for their own furniture designs to be executed by skilful craftsmen, so that the value of crafts would be upgraded in comparison with machine-produced goods and thus artistic quality improved.
